Brief Hydraulic Seal Overview

The hydraulic seal is a device designed to restrict fluid from escaping and foreign materials from entering a hydraulic application. Typically, a cylinder is being used and engineers continue to assess their available hydraulic cylinder seals by size for their future applications. The seals are designed to deal with high pressure dynamic applications, of which hydraulic cylinder seals are one. Hydraulic cylinders support different types of machinery. 

Hydraulic seals typically produce rotary and reciprocating motions. They can also be single or double acting. Single acting seals will only be used for one axial direction. But double acting hydraulic seals can be utilized in both directions in order to produce the reciprocating motion.

Alongside of hydraulic seals, pneumatic seals are also being manufactured for engineers. Another class of hydraulic seals should be mentioned here. This would have to be the hydraulic shaft seal. And then there are also high pressure hydraulic shaft seals. Typically used hydraulic seals is indicative of quite a wide range. These include piston seals, rod seals, rotary shaft seals and symmetrical seals. They also include rings. Rings are classified as wear, static, backup, O and V, not to mention buffer rings. And along with oil and grease seals will be found the famous gasket.

Both hydraulic and pneumatic seals are made from a wide variety of materials. These include nitrile, rubber, silicone, polyurethane, nylon, bronze, nickel and glass. Certain hydraulic seals will be molded from leather or fabric reinforced rubber. Having made mention of the seals’ capabilities as controlling devices for a variety of machines, emphasis should also be placed on its ability to provide machines with protection from corrosion.
